Are you a young writer? A kid with an idea for a start up? An older guy or gal tired of your stupid job but unable to find a way to do something else?

Frank Turner’s “Try This At Home” is for you. You need to start doing what you want to be doing. Right now.

When I was a lawyer, I desperately wanted to be a writer. But it always seemed like you had to know someone to get a job at a magazine or a newspaper. Agents seemed to only care about people who were already famous. I didn’t have the right connections or the right degrees.

So I started a blog and just started writing. I made friends, at first “just” internet friends (we’d never actually met), with other people who were doing the same thing.

It was sometimes wonderful and sometimes horrible. I had heartbreaks and broke hearts. I went broke and got broken. It took years of writing in obscurity and almost always no one paid me to do it.

I know not everyone had a happy ending. I was one of the lucky ones for whom it paid off. But I’m sure no one regrets taking up their laptop and trying it at home.

Stop waiting for permission or the lights to turn green. The only one who needs to say “okay go” is you.

(Also, watch the video. It’s a great song.)
